Research shows that regular therapeutic massage can:
  • trigger the relaxation response and lower heart rate
  • aid in recovery from muscle injury
  • increase range of motion and muscle strength
  • help relieve stiffness in muscles and joints
  • decrease stress hormone levels
  • improve energy and alertness
  • reduce pain in lower back, headache, fibromyalgia, and other pain syndromes
  • improve immune system functioning
  • decrease depression, aggression, and anxiety
You will benefit from an occasional massage, but you will benefit much more from regular once- or twice-monthly sessions. Your body learns to relax with practice, and it simply takes time to change the body. Also, the therapist learns more about your body each session, getting to know the techniques that work best for you and the spots that need extra care.

The therapist should apply a moderate-to-deep pressure; commonly used
light pressure and "energy work" can be relaxing for the moment, but do not provide many of the other longer-lasting physiological benefits of massage.
Your therapist should be able to find areas of tightness, which she/he can then start releasing with a variety of techniques.
